What Is CoinJoin and How Does It Protect Your Bitcoin Privacy?

CoinJoin is the technique behind most modern Bitcoin mixers. Here's how it actually works, and why it doesn't require trusting anyone with your coins.

Every Bitcoin transaction is recorded forever on a public ledger. Anyone — an exchange, a chain-analysis firm, a curious stranger — can trace a coin's history from wallet to wallet. CoinJoin is the most widely used technique for breaking that traceability without trusting a custodian with your funds.

How a Regular Transaction Leaks Information

A typical Bitcoin transaction has a small number of inputs and outputs, so it's usually obvious which output belongs to which participant. Wallet-clustering heuristics — common-input-ownership, change-address detection, amount correlation — let observers stitch these transactions into a picture of your spending habits, balances, and counterparties.

The CoinJoin Idea

CoinJoin combines many users' inputs into a single, large transaction with many equally-sized outputs. Because Bitcoin doesn't require inputs to map cleanly to outputs, an observer looking at that one transaction can no longer say with confidence which input paid which output — every participant's coins are mixed among a shared "anonymity set."

Crucially, no participant ever hands custody of their coins to anyone else. Each person signs their own inputs; the transaction only becomes valid once everyone has signed, and everyone's output address is chosen by themselves. This is what separates CoinJoin from a "trust me" custodial mixer.

Equal Outputs Matter

The privacy CoinJoin provides comes almost entirely from the outputs being the same size. If your output is 0.5 BTC and everyone else's is 0.1 BTC, you haven't hidden anything — the round trip is obvious. That's why mixing services standardize around fixed output denominations and may ask you to split a large balance across multiple rounds.

What CoinJoin Doesn't Fix

CoinJoin breaks the on-chain link between your deposit and withdrawal addresses, but it doesn't protect you from mistakes made after the mix — reusing a withdrawal address on a KYC exchange, for example, or publicly sharing the amount and timing of a withdrawal. Privacy is a practice, not a one-time transaction.
